A kidney transplant evaluation is a complex process. This section will help patients to navigate the process.

  1. There is a lot of helpful information on the websites provided in this section.
  2. Patients PCP and/or general nephrologist can contact the transplant center to get a patient set up for an appointment to begin an evaluation.
  3. Patients may be able to go on-line or call the local transplant centers directly to see about scheduling an initial visit.
  4. The UNOS website and the SRTR website have helpful information on how to find a transplant center.

  1. Once a patient is approved for transplant there are several things that the transplant center will discuss with the patient.
  2. The transplant team will begin more discussions about how to get a living donor and what will happen if the patient needs a kidney from a deceased donor.
  3. The patient will be placed on the waiting list for a deceased donor.

A denial may mean that there are no fixable issues, which would prevent a patient from ever being a transplant candidate. A denial may mean that a patient has fixable issues that will take more than 6 months to achieve

  1. Weight loss, fixable heart issues (bypass surgery or stents into the heart blood vessels).
  2. Cancer can come back fast and spread easily in a patient who is on anti-rejection medications.  These prevent the patients body from fighting the cancer, which allows it to grow fast and travel to other areas of the body.
  3. Recovery from cancer- many cancers require 5 years cancer-free before being listed.
  4. Some cancers may only require 2 years or less before being listed.

Transplant center denied a patient

  1. Ask the transplant center for a referral to a different transplant center
  2. Some centers are willing to take more risk
  3. Some centers differ in absolute reasons not to transplant a patient
  4. The patient's general nephrologist can help with a referral to a different transplant center
  5. Private insurance companies may limit at which transplant centers a patient can be evaluated.
